The GOP’s odd and new stance on abortion.
For all 51 years of my life the Republican platform included as its core value, life begins at conception. The fight to end Roe v. Wade has/had been going on for as long as I have been alive. Because of this core value, Republicans have stood strong as the “pro-life,” party with no exceptions. In the past, Donald Trump has said about abortion in an overturned Row world “there has to be punishment for the woman.” But after Florida passed their 6 week abortion ban, he criticized Governor Desantis calling it “a terrible mistake.” Trump has recently said of the Florida law that, “6 weeks is too short.” Huh? The leader of the “pro-life” Republican party is now “pro-choice?” JD Vance has stated and written on multiple occasions that he wants a national ban on abortion. In fact, his former public statements on abortion allow for no exceptions. He’s referred to pregnancy that results from rape as an “inconvenience.” During the VP debate he said he would NOT sign a nationwide abortion ban and denied he ever advocated for a national ban. This week the former Republican First Lady, Melania Trump came out strongly in favor of a woman’s right to choose. What exactly is the Republican party’s stance on abortion now? This just blows me away. Pro-life, with life beginning at conception WAS a core value of the Republican party. Donald Trump did something I never thought possible, he managed to transform the Republican Party from one that was based on the principle that life begins at conception or pro-life, to one that is now pro-choice? Baffling.
Just today, in Nebraska, I heard a sermon where the preacher/pastor asked his congregation to vote FOR a ballot initiative that would permit abortion through the first trimester and would include exceptions for the life of the mother, rape, and incest. What happened to “god’s will,” what happened to “life starts at conception?” Makes me believe that this was never really about saving lives, it was and is about controlling women. It’s about power and they realize that they have to accept abortion or they will lose it. Once again, principles don’t matter.
To be clear, I am pro-choice and believe ultimately it’s the women’s body that’s impacted, therefore it should be her right, alone, to chose. The hypocrisy of the religious right dumbfounds me.
